Yes. It’s been done, in fact. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was about 15 kt – equivalent to 15,000 tonnes of TNT. The biggest nuclear bomb ever tested was 50 megatons – 3,000 times more powerful and equivalent to 50 million tonnes of TNT. What a terrible thing to do with science.
Having been to the peace memorial museum at Hiroshima I can honestly say I really hope we don’t although it appears Martin says we have already. Nuclear bombs are horrible things. After visiting the Hiroshima peace memorial museum I can honestly say there is no reason we would want to. The effects of nuclear weaponry are horrible and effect so much more than the initial blast area.
