I wanted to be a famous scientist. I got about half way there.

My “plan” changed when I didn’t enjoy my PhD very much, and I realised I could change the area I worked in and try to find out what I enjoyed. I think it’s important to realise that it’s never too late to try something new, and if you’re enthusiastic and are prepared to have a go, people might just give you the chance.

I didn’t have a plan. I wanted to do either maths or physics in Uni, but I didn’t know what I would do after that. I kind of fell into being a scientist. I keep signing up for things that look like fun, and that seems to be turning into a career.

I agree with Martin. You’re never to old (or to young) to change your mind. When I was at GCSE level I wanted to work in the theater. Maybe as an actor or a musician, I also used to enjoy doing lighting and sound for plays and theater productions. I did a GCSE in Technical theater which I got an A* for.

I actually wanted to be a Veterinarian. That is until I did my work experience there and saw the surgeries and poor animals that would come in. I also almost fainted because I wasn’t used to the anaesthetic gas they use.
Now however, like Martin, I’ve not enjoyed doing my phD that much and I’ve decided I want to go into teaching science at secondary school. I just hope I’m cut out for it cos some people tell me that keeping you guys under control can be a challenge and a half!

At the time of my GCSE’s I really wanted to be a Dr (the medical kind) however it was just a lot of hard work. I got a bit lazy during my A-levels sadly and so I never really went anywhere with that Idea. Instead I just stuck with what I loved and did a degree in biochemistry. Now I much about with lasers in another country, not quite sure how that happened.
