I love getting to work on a problem for ages on my own. I’m quite introverted, so I like to just settle down in front of my computer or with a pen and paper, and try to figure something out that nobody has discovered before. It can be really frustrating, but when it works it’s a great feeling.
I like being in control of when and what I do. If I want to stay in bed until lunch time I can but I probably then have to stay in work until 2am. I also love looking at things that no one else in the world has seen… that’s got to be pretty cool hasn’t it?
I love it when we’ve been planning something for weeks or maybe months, working hard to get things working right and we finally get a good result. It’s just this great mix of relief and joy to see a hit from your sample and know you’ve got something to tell the world about.
During my phD I’ve had the chance to go to South Carolina, California, Berlin, Brussels, Biarritz (France) and Manchester! I love travelling to places, but normally I have to do a presentation in front of loads of people which took a lot of getting used to.
It’s a job where I get to use my brain! I’ve done jobs in the past where you really don’t need to and they get really boring really fast. I like that I don’t have to wear a suit or a uniform every day, I get to travel, and that I get paid to find out and understand interesting things!
